Champagne Antoine Bouvet

Antoine Bouvet works 5ha of vines across the villages of Mareuil-sur-Ay, Avenay Val d’Or and Bisseuil, an area that sits on the border of the Valée de la Marne and the Montagne de Reims. The domaine was founded by Antoine’s grandfather, Guy, in the 1970 and the majority of the selection massale vines were planted in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Roughly 60% is planted to pinot noir, and 40% chardonnay, though there is a small amount of co-planted pinot meunier. Since taking over sole management, chemical herbicides have been totally abandoned in favour of a shift to organic and biodynamic principles.

The current vintage release is 2014, the last vintage that Antoine and Guy worked together – the amazing labels are a tribute to this relationship – and as result they decided to put the bulk of production into the vintage cuvée. This will be disgorged in equal volume over four successive years with 0g/l. It’s a stunning wine, 50% chardonnay and 50% pinot noir, that is impeccably balanced, with a generous mouthfeel and persistent minerality. Antoine also produces a range of single varietal wines in tiny quantity – they instantly grab your imagination and the prospect of watching them develop over the next few years is very exciting indeed. They are worth seeking out.
