Champagne Étienne Calsac

Etienne works 4ha of vines - 3ha that he owns in the villages of Avize, Grauves and Bisseuil, in addition to a small plot in Montgenost in the Cote de Sezanne, where he works a further 1ha owned by his mother. Upon taking over his grandparents’ vines in 2010, Etienne converted to organic farming and sought to increase biodiversity through the use of cover crops and ploughing the vineyards. Parcels are vinified separately and Etienne is gradually increasing the amount of wine aged in oak over time, as well as maintaining two separate perpetual resrves. Etienne’s range is comprised exclusively of blanc de blancs, all chardonnay except for the small parcel in Montgenost coplanted with Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier and Arbane, and the Rosé de Craie, an assemblage which includes 10% still red from Vertus. The three chardonnays feature the entry level l’Echappée Belle and two single vineyard wines, Les Rocheforts from Bisseuil and the walled Clos des Maladies planted by Etienne’s grandfather in Avize. Dosage across the range sits between 2 and 5g/l. Etienne’s champagnes are incisive and pure, with a pervasive minerality, easy to love and great to drink.
